Photo: In June 2023, Trex opened the doors to its new global headquarters in Winchester and a new chapter in the company’s history. Home to more than 200 employees, the 64,000-square-foot facility was designed to reflect and continue Trex’s environmental heritage, from incorporating energy-efficient lights throughout, to installing solar cells on the roof and future EV charging stations in the parking lot. Even during construction, Trex leaned into its legacy of sustainability and innovation to achieve greater circularity and keep its environmental footprint to a minimum, initiatives that garnered the building Silver LEED status.
Trex Invests in the Shenandoah Valley, Residents
More than 25 years ago, Frederick County welcomed Trex Company. With a small team of 36 dedicated employees, the company set its sights high. Since then, Trex has invented, defined, and perfected the composite deck category, making the company the World’s #1 Decking Brand. Trex’s vision is to enhance the lives of people by engineering what’s next in outdoor living. And the world sees it, too. With $1.1 billion generated in net sales last year, Trex is proud to be the worldwide industry leader in their category.
However, Trex could not have gotten there without the support of the community.
That’s why the company continues to invest in the Shenandoah Valley with a capacity expansion completed in early 2022 and the opening of its new global headquarters in 2023.
Trex Drives Innovation Through Craftsmanship
In 1992, prior to Trex’s formation and return to the Shenandoah Valley, Mike Montgomery, along with Trex’s founders in Tampa, Florida, saw the potential. In 1996, Mike was part of the original 36 employees who learned the ins-and-outs of driving innovation to create sustainable, high-performance outdoor living products and bringing it back home to Winchester, Virginia, where it all began.
Mike attributes his career growth to the support of Trex team members who invested in him, as well as his passion for expanding and sharing his knowledge of mechanical operations with others.
Mike started out on the production floor and was promoted to Team Leader in four months. Now, he works as a Process Engineering Manager, and is responsible for leading Trex's process improvement initiatives and helping to maximize productivity and efficiency. His favorite part? Mike says he loves to be out on the production floor and meet new employees to share his experiences.

Trex Embraces Employee Advancement
When it comes to investing in its employees, Trex ensures that everyone has an opportunity to succeed and build a career. Rena Maffei, Production Manager of Trex’s Virginia Poly Operations, is one employee always ready to take her career to the next level.
Rena is leading Trex’s Virginia plastics reprocessing facility where she ensures that the organization has recycled materials to support growing demand. It’s a role she says she never imagined for herself more than 15 years ago when she started at Trex as a temporary employee, but she’s always prided herself in making the most of every opportunity.
Her career has also propelled her to take advantage of Trex’s many employee development programs, such as their tuition reimbursement program, which has led Rena to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business.
Her advice to new employees? Ask questions, learn from new opportunities, and most importantly, have the drive to succeed. “If you’re someone who is self-motivated and you have a good work ethic, you’ll love Trex,” she says.

Join Trex’s Team, Help Make a Difference
To support Trex’s growth, the company is looking for more driven folks who turn hard work into actual results. Trex employees are driven, dedicated, and determined individuals who come from all walks of life, bringing with them unique perspective, background, experience, and creativity. They are a group who is always looking for what’s next.
A dedicated community partner and supporter, Trex proudly gives back to the Shenandoah Valley, whether it’s to lend a helping hand to others or to our environment.
Since 2011, Trex has held an annual Plastic Film Recycling Challenge, encouraging K-12 schools to compete to collect the most plastic film in a six-month span. In August 2023, Trex launched a new expanded NexTrex Recycling Challenge, combining the company’s award-winning community and school competition-driven model to a self-initiated challenge. This updated challenge makes the process easier and more equitable so more participants have the opportunity to earn recognition and rewards for their recycling efforts. Under the new structure, a participating organization that collects at least 1,000 pounds of recycled film during a 12-month period will qualify to receive a composite bench from the Trex Outdoor Furniture Collection.
The company values the community it calls home. For 13 years running, Trex has been the most successful employee-led campaign in support of the United Way of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, with more than $1 million raised and donated over the last five years. In 2023 alone, thanks to Trex's dollar-for-dollar match, the company’s team members were able to raise more than $210,000 for the Northern Shenandoah Valley.
Photo: In 2024, the company unveiled its All Hands on Deck employee volunteer initiative, bringing team members together to have a tangible, positive impact in the communities Trex calls home by engaging them to come together and volunteer for local nonprofit organizations and events. In April, Trex debuted this initiative with Earth Day cleanups as well as helping out at the Highland Food Pantry.
Additionally, Trex is a proud sponsor of the Apple Blossom Festival and other community initiatives. In May 2024, the company unveiled its sponsorship of Trex Field, one of the two new full-sized turf soccer fields at Jim Barnett Park in Winchester. This sponsorship is just another example of Trex’s commitment to and investment in our hometown.
Trex wants you to be a part of their high-performing team. They’re looking for people who love where they live and who want to make a real impact at work. At Trex, you can find a wide array of careers that include industry-leading pay and benefits, in addition to growth opportunities.

In addition to its presence in the Shenandoah Valley, Trex has field and remote teams across the United States and worldwide, as well as a manufacturing location in Fernley, Nevada. The company will also open a manufacturing site in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 2024.
