Get to Know Navy Federal Credit Union
Navy Federal Credit Union is a member-owned and not-for-profit credit union that serves Department of Defense employees, military personnel, veterans, and their families. In a credit union, members are owners, not just customers, and at NFCU each one of them has a vote. Because it’s a not-for-profit institution, any surplus funds are returned to their members as dividends, reduced loan interest, and improvements to products and services.
Founded at the end of the Great Depression by seven Navy Department employees, the financial institution has grown from a group of workers trying to reach their own financial goals to more than 11 million members. Their global workforce consists of more than 20,000 employees, located at 350 branches around the globe and at their main campuses located in Pensacola, FL; Vienna, VA; and Winchester, VA.
A Valued Frederick County Partnership
Navy Federal began their relationship with Frederick County in 2004, when they purchased their first facility. The original 50,000-square-foot building was intended to be used as a disaster recovery location for their headquarters, but they soon decided to use this location as an operations center, opening it in September 2006 with just 60 employees.
Since then, the company has experienced incredible growth, and they’ve continued to invest in Frederick County. In 2008, they added 50,000 square feet of additional office space that included both a café and a fitness center for employees. To keep up with the company’s growth, in 2011 they further expanded the facility to 106,000 square feet to accommodate seating for 800 employees. The following year, they began construction on Building 2, adding 600 more employees. In 2017, Navy Federal broke ground on Building 3, a $100 million expansion effort that included a 1,500-space parking structure.
